Our speaker tonight will be Pete Kuzma (PhD student at MSO), with his talk titled “Tidal Tails and Stellar Streams in the Galactic Halo”
Abstract:
The Milky Way is surrounded by a diffuse spherical halo of stars and Globular Clusters known as the Galactic halo. Also in the galactic halo are large faint stream-like structures of stars that can be found in number. Despite whether these streams are from disrupting Globular Clusters, known as tidal tails, or from accreted dwarf galaxies, a lot can be learnt from these newly discovered stellar streams. I will present the techniques used and results to date of my PhD thesis, which cover the tidal tails of the Globular Cluster Palomar 5 and a search for the remains of accreted dwarf galaxies in the outer Galactic halo.
